The Mechanic Helper provides basic assistance to licensed Aircraft Mechanics in the upkeep of small general aviation aircraft and related ground support equipment.
Typical work involves:
• Items Worked With: Aircraft parts such as wheels and tires, batteries, hoses, clamps, access panels, seats, and other light components. Basic ground equipment such as jacks, tow bars, and carts.
• Tasks: Simple support duties such as helping remove or reinstall panels, cleaning and lubricating parts, handing tools to mechanics, holding components in place during inspection, and reporting any obvious issues (such as leaks or unusual noises) to the supervisor.
• Tools/Equipment/Techniques: Common hand tools (wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers), small lubrication devices, and safety equipment such as gloves and goggles. Techniques are limited to basic handling, visual checks, and assisting mechanics with simple fastening or cleaning tasks.
• Level of Complexity: Tasks are repetitive, routine, and always performed under the close supervision of a licensed mechanic. The position does not perform independent troubleshooting, repair, or certification.
Other related duties are general support tasks such as moving aircraft with a tow bar under supervision, helping unpack or store parts and supplies, delivering tools or equipment, assisting with housekeeping and waste disposal (such as rags or fluids), and helping with simple record-keeping or documentation tasks. These duties involve only basic handling of parts and materials, use of carts or protective gear, and simple data entry. They are low in complexity and always performed at the direction of a supervisor.
